Story of Eric Enstrom
In 1918, a bearded
old man selling foot scrapers called on Brother Eric Enstrom at his photography
studio in the little town of Bovey, Minnesota. Out of this chance encounter
came a world-famous photograph called "Grace" showing the elderly peddler with
his head bowed in a mealtime prayer of thanksgiving. This picture is known and
loved throughout the world and can be seen everywhere.
The unique part of all this is that Brother Enstrom once lived in this area and
became a Mason at Lincoln Lodge No. 226 in Milaca, Minnesota. That lodge has
since been consolidated with Fraternal Lodge No. 92 here in Princeton, where his
records will remain forever in the archives of our lodge.
Eric Enstrom came to Milaca in May of 1906
and was given his first, second, and Master Mason degree in Lincoln Lodge No.
226. Later on, he moved to Bovey, Minnesota and became a member of Canisteo
Lodge No. 271 in Coleraine, Minnesota. He attended lodge into his 90's there,
and passed away on November 16th 1968 at the age of 92. Canisteo Lodge
has since been consolidated with Itasca Lodge No. 208 in Grand Rapids Minnesota,
where those records will remain.
